Seaplane in the Andaman sea, Thailand

Back in 2008, one of the highlights of our trip to Thailand was flying by seaplane from Ko Phi Phi Don to Ko Yao Noi with Destination AirThe airline had inter-island flights between the more popular islands of the Andaman as well as a direct flights to Phuket airport. It cut down transportation times and was also a great way to see the islands from the air.

The company has since gone bankrupt and there is no longer any seaplane service available in the region. Below are a few photos of a very memorable and scenic flight between Ko Phi Phi Don and Ko Yao Noi.

About 10 minutes later we descended past the islands off Ko Yao Noi’s east coast (including Ko Hong which we would tour by boat later).

The plane dropped us off on a floating pier next to the Paradise Ko Yao Noi.

It was a really unique experience and a great way to see the Andaman sea and it’s islands. I’m hoping seaplane service comes back to this area one day.

Have you had any memorable flights on small planes? Love to hear about it!

  1. A seaplane?!?! How cool is that!!! I think I would freak out a little too. I am scared of heights but I always push my limits and try to conquer my fears!!! Is it expensive? And how long is the entire flight? I know my husband would absolutely love it!!!

    • Thanks Constance – It only took 15 minutes between the 2 islands which was better than taking the ferry from Phi Phi back to Phuket and taking another ferry in Phuket (at another pier on the Northern part of the island) to go to Ko Yao Noi. We saved at least 4 hours. I think it was about $75 each…I should have kept my receipt. Unfortunately it seems the company went bankrupt and are no longer in service. But it was a good experience and the pilot was a Canadian who had been a bush pilot in Northern Ontario. Very competent. Sad to see the business didn’t make it.
