A Visit to the Prague Zoo
The Prague Zoo ranks in the Top 3 of zoos in Europe. It’s also, in our opinion, the best activity for anyone visiting Prague with Children.
The zoo covers 58 hectares of land and has over 150 different exhibits featuring 4800 animals and 700 different species, including some 133 ‘endangered species”. We saw the Brown Hyena and Gharial Crocodile here, two species we’ve never seen in any zoo.
Prague Zoo is also heavily involved in both breeding and conservation, both in the zoo and projects in the wild. So it does a lot of good.
What we especially like about the zoo? It has natural barriers between many of the exhibits and an ‘open concept’. In some of the Pavilions, you walk into an ecosystem where the animals/birds roam freely (like the Biodome in Montreal). So the zoo, in many places, feels natural and allows for closer contact with the animals.

Tips and information
Official website with lots of good information on the zoo, the animals, and their mission.
Zoo Map – I suggest you print it out because they don’t have English versions at the zoo (they also charge for the map).
How to get there using public transport: Take the 112 bus from Nádraží Holešovice metro.
Tour. For a fun way to get there, you can take a Tour that includes a cruise down the river from the Old Town (it also includes admission to the zoo).
Tips:
1) Plan at least 6 hours. There’s lots to see.
2) Bring your own lunch. The food at the zoo restaurants is both expensive and poor quality.
3) Print out the map as suggested above. It will help you identify some of the animals. One of the negatives of this zoo is that signage is inconsistent – some plaques are in different languages (including English and German) but most are only in Czech. It is our biggest criticism of the zoo.
Prague Zoo makes for a great day, especially if you have children.
