The Best Hotels in San Miguel de Allende (for all budgets)

The best hotels in San Miguel de Allende

The Best Hotels in San Miguel de Allende (for all budgets)

San Miguel de Allende has some of the glitziest accommodation in Mexico. It seems like everyday there’s a new 5-star hotel popping up around the city center.

BUT, if you look hard enough, you can also find good budget accommodation in San Miguel.

In this post I cover the “Best” Hotels in San Miguel de Allende; “Best” meaning “good value”, and by that I mean getting your money’s worth whether staying in a 5-star hotel or in budget accommodation.

I give you some options below in different price categories (High-end, Mid-range, Budget). At the bottom of this post I also cover what to see and do in San Miguel de Allende.

Note: all ratings and pricing as of August 2024

High-end (5 Star)

According to the experts, the “Best” place to stay in San Miguel de Allende is the Rosewood. It’s won all kinds of awards and you’ll have everything you need (including a rooftop bar with views). That bar, the Luna, supposedly has the best cocktails in San Miguel de Allende. It’s an incredibly expensive hotel with rates starting around $700 US per night. As nice as the Rosewood is, that’s crazy. There are LOTS of excellent hotels in San Miguel de Allende at far more competitive prices.

Here are some 5-star alternatives:

Casa de Sierra Nevada

A perfect location just down the block from the Jardin and the Parroquia. A gorgeous location in a colonial mansion with gardens, a pool and high-end antique style furnishings. A 9.6 on booking.com with prices starting at $600 US, a great alternative to the Rosewood (with a more central and more authentic setting).

Hotel Apapacho Boutique

Hotel Apapacho Boutique is next to Parque el Chorro, a very green area close to the center. It gets a 9.8 rating on booking.com and prices are around the 200 USD range. A gorgeous outdoor space with a pool, atmospheric rooms, very high-end facilities. Steps from Parque Benito Juarez in an area with some of the most expensive properties in San Miguel (the Rosewood is across the park). A 10 minute walk to the main square.

LOtel-Casa Arca

LOtel-Casa Arca is in the center just 2 blocks from the main square (the Jardín). Another beautiful hotel with a sundeck and pool, restaurant and tasteful rooms. It gets a 9.2 rating on booking.com and prices start around $250.

As I say, there’s a 5-star hotel popping up all the time in San Miguel. But you can’t go wrong with any of the above.

Mid-Range

My mid-range category covers a lot of ground with a few pricier options (that compete in value with a 5 -star hotel) right down to some affordable excellent-value options.

Going from more expensive to less expensive…

Hacienda de las Flores

Right in the center in a colonial building, a large property with a swimming pool and comfortable spacious rooms. It’s a 4-star hotel in the $170 US range (with specials sometimes around $130 US). An 8.9 rating on booking.com.

Casa Cien Hilos

Another 4-star, you’ll find rooms in the $130-150 range. Very stylish, modern and cosy with a great location 2 blocks from the main square. A 9.1 rating on booking.com.

Casa Mia Suites

4-star, $100 USD range, a 9.2 rating on booking.com. What sets Casa Mia apart is that these are apartments with kitchens, dining rooms and spacious bedrooms. Some have 2 double beds, making these suites excellent if you’re a family. Traditional Mexican style and fabulous location a bit uphill from the main square.

Hotel Casa Don Quijote

A 3-star, $110 US range (with specials around $85), 9.0 rating on booking.com. It’s a few blocks from the center but for that you get spacious and comfortable rooms and a great breakfast.

Pied à Terre at Casitas Aparicio

3-star, $100 US range (but you’ll often see specials around $75), a 9.5 rating. These are apartments with kitchens and lots of space, both inside and out (you have an outdoor fireplace, a sun terrace). But it’s adults-only. It’s a 10 minute climb uphill from the center…but excellent value.

Budget

Finding budget accommodation in San Miguel is more difficult…but there are some options close to the city center (I’m only covering those easily accessible on foot from the center).

Casa Carly

$75-100 US range, 9.0 rating, these are suites with kitchen, living room and bedrooms. It’s like having your own home in San Miguel. There’s also a restaurant on the premises. Located in the pretty Colonia Guadalupe neighborhood, about a 10-minute walk from the center.

Casa Maricela B&B

$80 US range, 9.3 rating, great breakfast included, beautiful common space. Located in the center only a few blocks from the main square. Excellent value.

El mesón del Quijote

$50 US range, 9.1 rating on booking.com. An excellent value hotel, it is located a few streets up from the center close to the mirador (about a 10-minute walk to the main square). Great views of San Miguel from the terrace.

Meson Amelia

Meson Amelia has beds in dormitories (which start around $25) as well as private rooms with bathroom (at a multitude of prices averaging roughly $90 with breakfast included). In pretty Colonia Guadalupe, a 10 minute walk from the main square. A 9.0 rating on booking.com.

Hotel & Hostal Santuario

Rating of 9.0. I don’t think you can find a better-value option in San Miguel than this. A 3-star hotel with Dorms (which start at around $15 US with breakfast) and which also has private rooms (a double with private bathroom costs under $40 with breakfast) including family rooms (which, for a family of 6, goes up to $100 including breakfast). On top of everything, you’re a 5 minute walk to the center. Excellent value.

What to do in San Miguel de Allende

  • See the main square (the Jardin) and enjoy the beautiful buildings all around including the famous church – the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel.
  • Walk around the block of streets around center, enjoying the architecture and views. A special recommendation is Calle Aldalma.
  • Go to Benito Juarez Park then climb up “Bajada del Chorro”, eventually ending up at the mirador where you’ll have great views of the city. Follow this Photographic Walking Tour of San Miguel de Allende.
  • See San Miguel’s churches, there are about 40 of them.
  • Take the tourist trolley at San Francisco church if you prefer not walking.
