Rent our Apartment in Split!

We might have the most unusual apartment in Split.

6 months ago when we decided to make Split our base one of the considerations was being able to rent out our accommodations while we travel. We love Split but we also never want to stop travelling.

We found an apartment we liked and have been fixing it up to our tastes. Part of the process was shipping our furniture from Montreal including many of the things picked up on our travels (which for now we just don’t have the stomach to get rid of). We have cabinets and a library from India, drums and paintings from Africa, a Thai bench, Javanese desks…it’s why I say we may have the most unusual apartment in Split. [Read more…]

The place to stay in San Miguel de Allende

the place to stay in San Miguel de Allende

Where to stay in beautiful San Miguel de Allende? Stay where I do – at my mom’s !  It’s private, centrally located – and the value is phenomenal ($28 USD per night).

Here is a video I shot of the patio and room. Everything that you see in this video is your private domain when you stay here (my mom lives down below). [Read more…]

Things to See and Do in Mexico City (Part 2) – And why Teotihuacan was a massive disappointment

Things to See and Do in Mexico City (Part 2) – And why Teotihuacan was a massive disappointment

I’m going to get into trouble for this post.

I’ve previously written about Mexico City (Part 1) and how impressed I was. It’s a HUGE city and really can only be explored bit by bit. Last time we (my Mom and I) stayed in the historic center and explored some of the neighborhoods using the Hop On/Hop Off bus (which is a great way for the first timer to get a feel for Mexico City).

This time we stayed in an Airbnb apartment outside the Historic Center and were a little more adventurous getting around. We also visited the famous Mesoamerican ruins of Teotihuacan, a place I was dying to see after having previously visited Monte Alban (outside Oaxaca) and Cholula (outside Puebla). As you can probably guess by the title of this post, the experience was a letdown. I’ll explain that in this post as well as cover where you should go instead to get a more rewarding Teotihuacan experience. I’ll also add a few things (including 3 museums) to my list of things to see and do in Mexico City. [Read more…]

Rovinj – and the world’s – best Airbnb host. And a few photos of beautiful Rovinj.

Rovinj – and the world’s – best Airbnb host. And a few photos of beautiful Rovinj.

I’ll usually do a post on a city and at the bottom mention where we stayed. This time I’ll do it the other way around. Because how we felt about Rovinj was totally eclipsed by the incredible, fantastic, amazing and extraordinary Croatian family that hosted us.  I’ve never done a post uniquely addressing a place of accommodation so this is a first.

We stayed a total of 5 weeks in Marina’s apartment. On the first day we were treated to a full meal (made by Marina) served to us on our balcony. She’s a professional chef by the way. As we would find out, nothing you eat in Rovinj will compare to her cooking. Throughout our stay there were surprises: strawberries or salad left at our door, home-made crepes with (of course) home-made jam, home-made cakes, a large fish platter, seafood soup, a spinach dish, risotto…I could go on and on with all the food she plied us with over 5 weeks. Forget everything you’ve read. Rome is Incredible

Forget everything you’ve read – Rome is Incredible

I had read so many negative things online about Rome that I honestly had an aversion to visiting the city. People will tell you that it is a big and dirty city, that the transport is bad and that highlights are spread out and hard to see on a short visit. They’ll say that it’s packed with tourists, that locals are unfriendly and the food horrible. So when Lissette mentioned she’d like to visit the city – mainly to see St. Peter’s Basilica – I found myself making all kinds of excuses why we shouldn’t go. [Read more…]

Padova (Padua), Italy. And how we saved Big Bucks on Airbnb using it as a base in the Veneto region.

Padova (Padua), Italy. And how we saved Big Bucks (on Airbnb) using it as a base in the Veneto region

One of the things we always have to do when planning our time in Europe is juggling between Schengen and non-Schengen zones. When it became apparent in March that we wouldn’t have to go back to Canada for the summer, we decided that we would spend most of the summer (May to July) in Croatia. That meant planning another month (April) within the Schengen zone*.

* for those unfamiliar with the rules, I’ll break that all down at the bottom of this post.
.

We had a couple of scenarios. [Read more…]

Photo Essay: Why we keep falling in love with Prague

Photo Essay Why we keep falling in love with Prague

This was our 3rd time in Prague. The first time we spent 3 months here. Last year we came back and spent a week. This time we came back for a month, getting some dental work done and enjoying the city all over again.

Here are a whole bunch of photos taken over the month of March, including a few photos of Prague covered in snow and some Easter preparations. [Read more…]

Bamberg, Würzburg or Nuremberg? Photos that’ll convince you why Bamberg should be your base in Franconia

Bamberg, Würzburg or Nuremberg Photos that’ll convince you why Bamberg should be your base in Franconia

On a recent trip to Germany’s Franconia area we were confronted with an issue: where to base ourselves for our 9 days in the region. There were 3 main choices: Nuremberg (the biggest city in the area), Würzburg (a lovely smallish city on the popular “Romantic Road”) and Bamberg (a small town who’s historical center is listed as a World Heritage site). We had originally thought Würzburg based on recommendations from friends and I went about trying to rent an apartment on Airbnb. I found prices on the high side. I decided to look at Bamberg – and then found the perfect apartment at a good price. So Bamberg it was. [Read more…]

Why Vienna and Beyonce are kind of similar

Why Vienna and Beyonce are kind of similar

It’s not often that I equate a city to a celebrity. But being in Vienna reminded me of a conversation that I had with Lissette recently. [Read more…]

A year of Airbnb apartments (July 2014 – July 2015)

A year of Airbnb

We had never used Airbnb before last summer. Move the clock forward and we’ve stayed 196 nights of the past year in a total of 15 Airbnb apartments. I don’t know how we would travel the way we do without Airbnb.

In this post I’ll feature our favorite Airbnb apartment stays over the past year [Read more…]
