Things that seem weird when you go to Europe

When we left Canada to travel full-time 4 years ago we didn’t think that most of our travels would be in Europe. It’s a continent we’ve fallen in love with. There are many reasons for that which I’ll write about sometime.

Arriving in Europe there are many little things that are very different than in North America. Other differences are very subtle. I decided to write about some of the things that have stood out for us along the way. Note: I’m not bothering with the glaringly obvious like that Europe is a much smaller continent, that countries are small, that people speak a lot of languages etc, etc. Most people know all that. I’m sticking to particularities that foreigners (especially North Americans) might consider weird, or just different, when coming to Europe. [Read more…]

Our 60 Favorite Photos from 2016

Our 60 Favorite Photos from 2016

A couple of weeks ago I did a wrap-up of our favorite (and not-so-favorite) places visited in 2016. We took so many photos in 2016 that we decided to go through them and choose our favorites from the year.

“Favorite” photos doesn’t necessarily mean “best” photos. “Favorite” can mean a place that holds a special memory (like that dog lying at Lissette’s feet) or a place that was just overall a special place (Cape Town was for me “that special place”).  [Read more…]

Looking back at 2015…and forward to 2016

Looking back at 2015...and forward to 2016

A lot of people hate the yearly recaps that travel bloggers come up with this time of year. I actually love doing them: year end posts are about remembering what we did in the year, how far we came in fulfilling what we hoped for, and remembering how we felt about the places we visited as well as where we are in life. After all, the main goal when I set up this website was to document our travels.

In this post  you’ll see a summary of the different places we went, our favorites (we’ve been to a few places this year that we want to return to), as well as some thoughts on our lifestyle as full-time (slow*) travellers. I’ll also go over some of our plans for the coming year. [Read more…]

Why Peles castle is the one place you can’t miss in Romania

Why Peles castle is the one place you can't miss in Romania

Peles Castle is the most beautiful castle we’ve seen anywhere and was, without a doubt, our sightseeing highlight in Romania. Spanky looks at me funny when I throw fancy words around but I’ll say one here because it applies perfectly to Peles: it is absolutely sumptuous. There, I’ve said it and still feel like a man. Highlights around Brasov, Romania (including Bran Castle)

Highlights around Brasov, Romania

There are some easy day trips from Brasov, including to the famous Bran Castle (also known as “Dracula’s Castle”). You may find yourself surprised by some of the highlights you’ll find below – we actually enjoyed them in reverse order of popularity and were astounded that some get little to no visitors. Brasov, Romania in Photos. And our ‘no-fluff’ thoughts on staying here an extended period of time.

Brasov, Romania in Photos. And our no-fluff feelings about the place 875

It’s taken us a bit of time to put our feelings together about Brasov. It’s definitely a very pretty place and worth a visit. But as ‘slow travellers’ who will have been here a month by the time we leave, how do we feel about Brasov? I’ll explore that in this post. [Read more…]

Budapest to Brasov on the Night Train

Budapest to Brasov on the Night train

Lissette has always dreamed of the luxury and romance of the Orient Express. Since that doesn’t operate anymore she got the next best thing: Budapest to Brasov on the night train 😉 . I was looking forward to it, there’s something exciting about crossing East European borders at night on a train. It’s the closest I’ll ever feel to being Jason Bourne. [Read more…]
